Understanding Australian bin colours

Most Australian councils follow the Australian Standard AS 4123.7 for bin lid colours: a red lid for general waste, a yellow lid for mixed recycling, a green lid for garden organics, and a lime green lid for combined food and garden organics (FOGO). A few councils run local variations: some South Australian councils (such as Charles Sturt and Port Adelaide Enfield) use a blue general waste lid in place of red, and parts of the ACT use a dark green general waste lid.

Collection frequency varies. The classic pattern is weekly red, fortnightly yellow, fortnightly green. but many councils have moved to weekly FOGO with fortnightly red and yellow as part of state-level food waste targets. Pick your council above to see exactly what applies at your address.

Understanding UK bin colours

The UK has no national standard for bin lid colours. Each council chooses its own colour scheme independently, so colours vary significantly between neighbouring councils. The most common pattern is a black, grey, or dark bin for general waste (landfill), a blue bin for mixed recycling, and a brown or green bin or caddy for food and garden waste. Some councils, such as Cardiff, collect most streams weekly rather than fortnightly.

Most English and Scottish councils alternate general waste and recycling on a fortnightly rotation, with food waste collected weekly using a small caddy. Garden waste is typically a separate subscription service.
